The Right Blend of Strategy and Tactics

Abstract

One of the biggest failing of companies is to get the balance wrong between strategy and operational delivery. Some companies are obsessed by strategy (especially those with ex management consultants in senior positions) and then fail to get the best result by a lack of emphasis or skills in applying that thinking into the day to day detail of running the business. Others companies especially medium and smaller companies are excellent at operational delivery and full of commercial acumen but lack the intellectual firepower or intent to spend time on establishing the right strategy prior to launching and running the business in the marketplace. There are many examples of either bias to the detriment of the business which we can discuss. It's the job of the Chief Executive with help from the Leadership team and NED's to get this balance right.

Speaker Biography

Tony Rice was appointed Chief Executive of CWI on 11 November 2008, moving from his role as Group Finance Director and Joint Group Managing Director, Central. He held this position from April 2006, having previously served as a Non-executive Director of the Company. Tony has significant senior executive experience in the aerospace, healthcare and communications industries. He was Chief Executive of Tunstall Holdings Ltd, the world's largest telecare and telehealth solutions business, from March 2002 until its sale in September 2005. Prior to Tunstall, Tony served as an adviser to Orange (UK), the mobile telecoms group, and was a Non-executive Director at Telewest from 1998 to 2001. Tony is a Trustee of Help the Aged and was appointed as a Non-executive Director of Punch Taverns plc on 6 December 2007 and as Chairman of Alexander Mann Solutions on 28 July 2008.
